YouTube is a huge library of kids' videos. But next to good cartoons it's easy to stumble on pointless, overly loud or simply unsuitable clips — and the recommendation algorithm has no idea your child is four.

We've picked 10 channels trusted by millions of parents over the years. They build language, teach counting and understanding emotions — and stay calm and easy to follow for preschoolers.

How much is enough

Even the best channel can't replace play, time outdoors and talking together. The World Health Organization recommends:

How to make watching worthwhile

groups
Watch together

At least the first few times: you'll see whether the channel fits and can talk about what you watched.

forum
Talk and ask questions

What did you like? What did the character do? That turns a video into a conversation, not background noise.

music_note
Repeat songs and words

Sing along and copy the moves — especially with English-language channels.

tv_off
Don't leave it on in the background

Background video gets in the way of play and focus. Put it on to watch, switch it off when you're done.
